RECOVERING FROM INFIDELITY COUNSELING

RECOVERING FROM INFIDELITY COUNSELING

A client once asked me how many couples come to see me with infidelity issues, I answered, around 25% – 30%. Then it occurred to me that, that’s only the percentage of the people who are willing to give it another chance after the affair. Majority of others faced with infidelity issues break up from it.

Once the secret is out that there has been an affair, communication becomes a difficult task for the couple. One partner may feel guilty and remorseful while the other feels absolute shock and betrayal. These emotions gets in the way and prevents a couple from really looking at the underlying cause of the affair.

Marriages recovering from infidelity is rare without proper counseling, without that trained third party who can help couples to:

  • Cope with the ensuing sense of displacement, the feeling that the betrayed may never trust again
  • Face with the gruesome realization that the marriage has flaws which are quite real.
  • Express their emotions in a productive and vulnerable manner, allowing them to clearly define their relationship issues
  • Communicate adequately, and understand each other’s deepest feelings
  • Overcome the grief of infidelity and eventually find a path to recovery

“The future success of a relationship after infidelity depends on the remorse of the betrayer, forgiveness of the betrayed, and the two to work on their flaws.”
